When I woke up I headed for the coast again. Somethings caught my eye yesterday when I was puttering around and I needed to investigate.
First I came across this sign pointing the direction to a German Cemetery from the war.
Almost 12,000 interned here. It was strange I think alot of them died from injuries later. Many had a death date of 1946 and so on after the war.
The inside. It had a bit of a strange feeling because you are surrounded completely. it was in a circular shape with the crypts in little compartments I think each one held something close to 300 people...
The view from the top of the cemetery and what I am pursuing today!
I made it to this spectacle. Mount Saint Michel is the name. I had no clue it existed i just stumbled upon it riding around. It was a monastery built on a rock just off the coast of France.
I guess in the 1800's it was used a a prison for some time also.
It appears it is a big deal and rather famous, kind of embarrassed I didnt know about it considering the research I had done on the area. There were a ton of people there.
This is a wheel the prisoners had to use. It had a rope that went down to lower levels. If the prisoners wanted their food and what not they had to get in this wheel and walk around, like a gerbil, to raise and lower the rope.
Thats Mount Saint Michel!
After that I headed towards the American Cemetery in Britany.
I arrived and it was completely empty. I ate a snack in front then went inside to walk around.
It was just as impressive as Normandy. With about 5000 laying here only half the size.
The chapel as you walk in
The same graves but they are arranged in a bit of an arc, instead of exactly straight lines as Normandy, this gives this a bit of an interesting illusion as you walk through
After that I decided I wasnt far and I had already paid for the week of camping so I might as well head to Le Mans. I got a bit confused on directions, not lost as long as I have gas I am not lost, but finally found my way there.
